NoStolenValor.com Urges Navy to Keep USS Doris Miller Name on CVN-81

Independent civic project supports preserving the historic carrier naming while also supporting additional recognition for Dorie Miller, including Medal of Honor consideration.

NoStolenValor.com, an independent personal civic project founded by U.S. Navy veteran Eric Verona, is calling on Navy and national leaders to preserve the name USS Doris Miller for the future Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier CVN-81.

On January 20, 2020, the U.S. Navy announced that CVN-81 would be named for World War II hero Doris "Dorie" Miller. The Navy described the decision as historic: the carrier would be the first named for an African American and the first named for a Sailor honored for actions while serving in the enlisted ranks.

Recent reporting in August 2026 says Navy officials are considering changing the carrier's name, with President Donald Trump discussed as a possible namesake. No final renaming decision has been publicly announced, and the Pentagon has said it has nothing to announce at this time.

The current reports also say the Navy is considering naming another warship for Miller and that Miller has been submitted for consideration for a posthumous Medal of Honor. The project's position is simple: keep CVN-81 named USS Doris Miller. If Dorie Miller is awarded the Medal of Honor, let that honor be added to the carrier naming, not exchanged for it.

The current controversy has additional historical context. At a February 27, 2020 White House event, President Trump praised the Navy's decision to name the carrier for Miller and joked that he had not been given such an honor, later responding, "One day, maybe."
