THE STORY

An honor already bestowed.

Dorie Miller served aboard USS West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor and became one of the most recognized American heroes of World War II. On January 20, 2020, the U.S. Navy announced that the future Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier CVN-81 would be named USS Doris Miller in his honor.

The naming was historic: the Navy said it would be the first aircraft carrier named for an African American and the first named for a Sailor honored for actions while serving in the enlisted ranks.

Now that naming decision may be at risk. Recent reporting says Navy officials have discussed changing the carrier’s name. No final renaming decision has been publicly announced.

Another honor should not replace this one.

Reports say the Navy is considering another warship bearing Miller’s name and that Miller is under consideration for a posthumous upgrade from the Navy Cross to the Medal of Honor. Those would be meaningful honors. They should not require surrendering the carrier naming already announced.

Our position is simple:

Keep CVN-81 named USS Doris Miller. If Dorie Miller’s heroism warrants the Medal of Honor, award it too. Honor should be added, not traded away.
